I don't watch reality TV shows because I truly believe the actors are all professional and being paid for their 'performances' but I did happen to catch a glance of a show last week where the 'actors' (or chefs) were given the same ingredients and had to create meals with only the provided ingredients. So last evening, knowing we were having hamburgers for supper, I thought to let the kids have their own version of a 'cook-off'. Each were given ground meat in a bowl and the 'allowed' ingredients were placed between them. I used a timer and they had 20 minutes to create the hamburger patties.
I thought for certain the kids would go crazy with the ingredients but turns out they used very little and the burgers were really good! As you can see from the photos, Gabe was totally focused on the timer sitting on the scale in front of him. I don't think he took his eyes off the timer for more than a few seconds. Thankfully, Rylee was near the sink and could wash her hands at least 20 times while attempting her burgers :).
Thinking I may try this 'event' the next time we have pasta and let the kids create their own sauce...hmmm...any other ideas for a 'cook-off'?
so cute.. what a great idea Rosa...

ReplyDeletedude i LOVE this idea - HOW FUN!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe Denis and I will start having cook offs! ha
Oh dear!!!!!!! We'd be eating burgers with pop rocks in them or something for sure. This is a great idea though. You could make any type of pasta casserole and have them put what they wanted in it for ingredients or pizza,or calzones, and put their own toppings inside.Way Cool!
ReplyDeleteAwesome ideas Julie! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAh, Rosa, your post made me smile! A dessert cook-off could be VERY interesting with kids. I like the pizza idea too!
ReplyDeleteLOL @ pop rocks in hamburgers - thank heaven my kids are too old for that! Pizza was always a hit (not to mention it encouraged them to eat the veggies they ended up putting on the pizzas), as are Quesadillas. Your lovely kids look like they are thoroughly enjoying themselves! Cheers, Susi
